Q. Is the Web more than just a PC and a modem?
A. You betcha. Look at Disney.

Yes, I think it is and you need to be aware of the implications of this when clients come knocking on your door and ask whether you can manage their Web production requirements. You could well be letting yourself in for a whole lot more than you imagine. Often, this assumption is safe, but not always. My first recollection of reading about what we nowadays call Multimedia was sometime during the 1970’s when I read about some mixed media presentations. These were part of some work that Disney were doing in the theme parks and people were surrounded by projected images from 35 mm slides. Sound was also played and the projectors were synchronised together and to the soundtrack. Now, there’s still a lot of that work going on and now we have video-walls, lasers and MIDI – and all over the Web too. I consider Multimedia and the Web to include the full array of theatrical effects and staging, and to that extent, I would tackle a project that included pyrotechnics, MIDI controlled lighting Web-casting and hydraulic lifts as well. The point I’m making here is that although the common view is that Multimedia consists only of sound and video played on a PC screen from a CD-ROM, it really is potentially much more than that. Add a Web browser and a large pinch of bandwidth and see what you’ve got.
