Q. That sounds like fun - how can I get a job doing Web?
A. All the good jobs pay zero wages.
All sorts of people ask me this. Sometimes it’s folks who are looking for a change of career. Sometimes it’s a young person at a youth club or school who is asking for advice. I think to some extent, it depends on what role you are looking for. If you are a content specialist, then some background in the subject is certainly helpful. If you are interested in the artistic or musical side then experience in those areas is certainly worthwhile. If you are looking for work in the integration and programming area then a software development background is good. A really useful combination of skills is the ability to write, draw and program computers. So, I would suggest that people with a background in technical publications are going along the right lines. This might sound strange, but no more so than experience as a journalist being a good foundation for work in television and radio. Assembling and presenting material for publication requires many of the same ‘information engineering’ skills. Now I am bound to think like this because I find that the time I spent as a technical author and illustrator, and as a graphics programmer and prior to that my engineering background have all helped me to come to terms better with Web development projects.
