Q. Is there any asset database management software available?
A. How much money do you have to spare?
Well, there are things like Aldus Fetch and a while ago, there was something called Mariah. I dare say you could find a half dozen or so browsers.
But that’s all they are - just browsers. They are not set up for content-based retrieval of large objects from a huge database. Now you could probably assemble something with some SQL and a server. Perhaps within about 12 to 18 months, there will be some powerful systems available. In fact there may be some applications for high end users just coming along now. But for the workgroup running a batch of Macs or PC’s, a query by content database manager is not on the horizon yet. Unless you know better that is (which is likely).
One technology worth noting is called QBIC (Query By Image Content) which is included in several IBM technological solutions. However, you will likely need to be running an RS-6000 or a Power Visualisation system to be able to make significant use of this.
So, here is a marketing opportunity and a technical challenge to be able to deliver this kind of query by image and video content database on a PC or Macintosh. And if you are developing it right now, can we have it as soon as possible, please?
