Q. What is the right production metaphor?
A. Almost anything works but choose the right model for the project.
Some Web projects work well if they are managed as if they were a book-publishing job. Others might work if one person is directing as if it were a movie. Each company will generally converge on a particular style of presentation, and over several projects will evolve a way of getting things done that suits the people who develop the content. I don’t believe there is any one right or wrong way to do this but you should be open to setting your projects up in different ways if you think the content will develop more logically. Assembling the content for a book as opposed to a Movie is a quite different process of research and development. If your multimedia project is more reference and educationally oriented, then a book-publishing model may work best. A game or entertainment project might be a natural candidate for a Producer/Director approach.
